The Scarlet Letter

Roland Joffé: The Scarlet Letter (1995)
“The Scarlet Letter” is the film version of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel and to some extent loyal to it. The film tells the story of the forbidden love between Hester Prynne, whose husband is assumed dead, and the Reverend Dimmesdale. The film is set in a Puritan society.

  • Why is Hester Prynne such an eyesore to the ladies of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from the very beginning?
  • Arthur Dimmesdale makes his own City on a Hill sermon in church.
Comment on his rhetoric and whether or not he practices what he preaches?
  • What do the Native Americans think of the Puritans and vice versa?
  • Why is Reverend Dimmesdale translating the Holy Bible into Algonkin?
  • How and why is Mrs Hibbons an outcast of the Puritan society?
  • What is sin?
    According to the Governor?
    According to the Reverend Dimmesdale?
    According to Hester Prynne?
  • Is Reverend Dimmesdale an anti-hero?
  • Is the ending of the film realistic, including the bit about the Governor wanting to apologize to Hester Prynne in public? Or is it a Hollywood ending?
