Task 11.5 Speech Analysis: National Conservatism and Immigration

On May 15, 2023, Conservative Home Secretary Suella Braverman gave a speech at a National Conservatism (NatCon) conference in London. According to the organisers from the right-wing populist NatCon movement, “the idea of the nation” was at the heart of the conference. The movement has supporters (including Braverman) within the Conservative Party.

Task 11.6 Podcast Analysis: Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery

Listen to the podcast “Trafficked” (The Guardian, March 2023). In four episodes of 30 minutes, the podcast tells the story about Julia, a young Ukrainian woman who escapes modern slavery in the UK. In 2014, Julia was trafficked by criminals from Ukraine to Britain, where she lived as an illegal migrant, working under slave-like conditions in hotels and brothels, for five years.
